fairy knots

The sight of this wild mare and foal immediately captivated my attention. While the tender moment they shared was heartwarming, it was the mare's mane that truly intrigued me. The wind-knotted strands seemed like intricate weavings deliberately crafted. It almost felt as if each knot held a story of its own, hinting at a mystical origin. Could it be possible that the ancient legend, speaking of fairies visiting horses at night to create these enchanting Fairy Knots, held a grain of truth?

This stallion, now in his remarkable thirty-first year of life, is an enduring symbol of untamed beauty in the vast expanse of Onaqui. It's an awe-inspiring experience to stand before such an iconic creature and photograph him. Seeing Old Man emerge in front of my camera was captivating. In his unwavering gaze, there's a profound eloquence—a silent language that whispers of love, loyalty, strength, and courage. It was an active morning for the wild horses. In this sprawling landscape, unfolded a flurry of antics - some engaged in spirited scuffles, while others enjoyed the fresh morning grass. After taking their turn drinking from the waterhole and thoroughly enjoying a mud bath, the horses congregated closely for a moment of rest.

Under the sun's increasing warmth, the once-wet mud on their coats transformed into a hardened shell, preserving the memories of their earlier frolics. This band of 4 drew together, heads bowed together and eyelids gently closed, for a well earned mid-morning nap.

incoming storm

The looming threat of thunderstorms hung in the air that day. As the afternoon lingered on, the sky above the distant mountains darkened, and the air became laden with the unmistakable scent of ozone indicating an incoming storm.

Under this dramatic and foreboding sky, the horses continued to graze peacefully. However, as the first distant claps of thunder echoed through the air, accompanied by the subtle patter of raindrops, a subtle restlessness stirred among the horses. As the rain intensified, changing from a gentle drizzle to a relentless downpour, the herd's grazing transformed into a sudden burst of energy, and they vanished into the veil of rain.

Old Man, the icon of Onaqui.

The profound impact of this stallions presence is felt throughout Onaqui and he holds a special place in the hearts of many. That morning, I found myself in the quiet company of this legendary stallion as he rested. Occasionally, he would gently bend his neck to brush a bothersome fly away. Though a seemingly ordinary gesture in the daily routine of a wild horse, the grace of his movement and the interplay of light on his beautiful head truly captivated me. It is in these simple yet profound moments that inspiration flourishes, reminding us to seek beauty in the whispers of the everyday.

Old Man is a much-loved and favorite stallion among visitors to Onaqui and despite my several days in Utah, I had not caught a glimpse of him yet. As I made my way to one of the spots where the horses usually graze, there instead of a grazing herd, a single white figure stood amidst the pink cheatgrass, a living legacy amidst the tranquil landscape.

It was a sight that resonated deeply—a seamless blend of nature's beauty and the enduring spirit embodied by Old Man. In that breathtakingly beautiful moment, the world seemed to stand still as I watched the beloved icon of Onaqui, illuminated by the soft pink glow of sunrise.

I decided to invest in some professional mustang photography and this beauty arrived today (Sunrise Pink). I picked this photograph because I have been able to personally see this stallion on a few occasions in the wild, while visiting the Onaqui herd. Jessica Farren/4005 Images was fantastic to work with – quite a feat picking the right image that would be clear and crisp, considering the size of the image (40x60), and she was helpful and willing to pull different images while I was in the decision making process. I love it so much!

waterhole

This photograph is a treasure in my collection and it holds a significant place in my heart from my time with the Onaqui horses. It was midmorning, unbearably hot, the quiet rhythm of the horses' movements, from swishing tails to visits to the waterhole, created a peaceful atmosphere. Despite the challenging lighting conditions and the horses in a restful state, there was an undeniable allure in the scene unfolding at the waterhole. It called me to immortalize that moment through my lens, it was an overwhelming feeling to preserve every detail before me.

Of all the captivating sights witnessed during that trip, this image stood out. It was the first photograph I chose to print and frame, now a daily reminder that graces the walls of my office. Each time I glance at it, I am transported back to the waterhole, reliving the tranquility and connection with nature, and serves as a reminder to embrace the present and be in the moment.

wild ones

The scene unfolded before me with a sudden flurry of activity that broke the morning stillness. A commotion rippled through the herd, horses began to lift their heads from their morning nap, mares nudged their foals to get up.

During this orchestrated chaos, a white mare emerged being chased by a chestnut stallion. The air was filled with tension as the stallion navigated behind the mare, strategically moving her away from a rival male, and then as swiftly as the turmoil had begun, it came to an abrupt halt.

The dust kicked up by the galloping hooves had barely settled before a sense of calm descended once more upon the herd. Each member, seemingly unfazed by the recent disruption, effortlessly returned to their respective resting positions as if nothing had disturbed the rhythm of their morning routine. It was a thrilling moment to photograph and I couldn't help but marvel at the swift transition from chaos to serenity within the herd.

Against the backdrop of a vibrant blue sky adorned with puffy white clouds and purple grasses, a picturesque scene unfolded. Emerging over a distant ridge, a small, colorful band of horses came into view. Among them, a gray stallion could be seen, leading the group with determination. His purposeful strides urged his mares and playful foal to keep pace with the rest of the Onaqui herd. This harmonious blend of nature and wildlife created a truly captivating moment in the stunning Utah landscape.
