June 13 Sunset - June 14 Sunset and Sunrise

I invite you to participate in a photography workshop at Duchess Sanctuary in Oakland, Oregon, scheduled for the weekend of June 13th. The workshop will begin on Friday afternoon/evening, allowing you to capture a stunning sunset, followed by two focused sessions on Saturday: one at sunrise to photograph the horses in the soft morning light, and another at sunset for more breathtaking imagery. Duchess Sanctuary is an expansive and nurturing environment, covering 1,100 acres in the Oakland hills and home to 175 horses.
You will have the unique opportunity to photograph two primary herds: the draft crosses and a variety of lighter breeds, including mustangs, quarter horses, thoroughbreds, appaloosas, and Arabians. While I am optimistic about enjoying two beautiful sunset sessions, please keep in mind that weather conditions can vary, with the possibility of clouds or morning fog. On Saturday, you will have substantial free time between sessions to explore the scenic surroundings of Oakland, known for its picturesque farms and covered bridges. Alternatively, if you prefer, you can spend time in the Sanctuary Barn, where I’ll be available for personalized sessions focused on Lightroom or basic Photoshop editing. There will be plenty of tables and outlets available for you to charge your laptops as you work.
Additionally, I’m pleased to share that a portion of your session fee will directly benefit Duchess Sanctuary, contributing to its mission and the care of these wonderful horses. We aim to provide you with a constructive and inspiring experience that will enhance your photographic skills while immersing you in the beauty of the sanctuary. We look forward to seeing you there!

I invite you to join my workshops designed to enhance your creative process and explore the art of photographing horses. These sessions are welcoming to photographers of all levels, ensuring everyone can benefit. To fully engage in the workshop, it’s helpful to have a foundational understanding of your camera and its features. No prior experience with horses is required, and we will begin with a comprehensive safety demonstration to ensure a secure and enjoyable experience for everyone.
I suggest using a DSLR or mirrorless camera with a removable lens system for your photography. For equine portraits, my go-to lenses are the 70-200mm f/2.8 and the 85mm f/1.4, which. While wide-angle lenses like the 35mm or 50mm can be excellent for other photography styles, they may not be the best fit for capturing equine portraits. If you don't already have a 70-200mm lens, renting one could be a great option. I often use lensrentals.com, but there are plenty of other rental services available as well.
